It's a paradigm shift and, in order to survive, publications will need to hide their content behind a paywall and AI firms will need to pay up to access it. I believe Reddit and New York Times have such agreements. This is the media's Napster moment.
I don't disagree with you here one bit and a great article on something I've wondered about with AI. I use Perplexity for a news source now and I noticed how sources can be as few as 5 up to 20 to get comprehensive and compact news.
That said I think it's now up to AI companies that are pulling this data to pay a fee to those sources. If news orgs and others get affected in the bottom line by AI search engines then those engines should pay for what they gather. Kind of like a paid subscription. People have gotten away from one online source, ie Huffington News and gone to AI because its pulling multiple sources for c\what we hope is correct and accurate information versus misinformation.
It was insulting but what do you expect Google to say? Yes, we're single handedly ruining people's live?
No, I expect Google to lie and spin.
