Thank you for your thoughtful comments, Daniel. Actually, my point is that the people on the "bottom" are NOT paying with their clicks. Clicking to an advertiser-supported website appears to but doesn't actually support that website unless the person buys the advertised products.
The frustration for new content creators is something that has existed for a decade, and the new zero-click idea doesn't hurt them further.
I also contend that only a tiny handful need to "do a deal," while the rest need subscriptions, advertising or sponsorships or all the above. What's missing is that the chatbot companies need to highlight and showcase the content creators or lose their data and with it their customers.
Yes, it's a bad time. But when was it ever a good time?
What you’re describing sounds like a pyramid scheme. The people on the bottom are “paying” with their clicks.
The frustration I see for new content creators, is that they will never be able to afford visibility because they won’t have the money to “do a deal“ With Google or perplexity.
Feels like this is a bad time to start a Substack Or a YouTube channel (Of which I just started three).
If nobody is really clicking on Google searches, yet clicking is what Google is making most of their money from— Isn’t the whole thing just smoke and mirrors? The first 10 sites that come up in a Google search— are generally the only ones that matter. So who can afford that?
I used to run ads on Facebook for a private school that I worked for. Spending a few hundred dollars on one ad— Got clicks and views, but mostly from people overseas, who would never pay for their kid to go to the school. Again- All smoke and mirrors.
All time great quote of this anycast was Mike's "One thing that hasn't changed is nobody knows anything". Virtual roar!
Haha! Thanks, Tim!
